Overview:
Embark on an unforgettable journey along the historic Boulder Mail Trail, a stunning route that connects the charming towns of Escalante and Boulder, Utah. This classic backpacking adventure offers a glimpse into the rugged beauty and rich history of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Whether you prefer a brisk one-night adventure or a more leisurely two-night exploration, this trip promises an immersive experience through some of Utah's most breathtaking landscapes.
Trip Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Escalante, UT
Optional: Start your adventure with transportation from Salt Lake City, UT, to Escalante, where your journey begins.
Upon arrival in Escalante, meet your guide and fellow adventurers for a pre-trip briefing.
Overnight stay in Escalante
Day 2: Trailhead to Death Hollow (Between 6.5 & 9.5 miles depending on campsite location)
Begin your trek from Escalante, following the historic mail route that once served as the only communication link between these remote towns.
Traverse scenic canyons, cross open plateaus, and enjoy sweeping views of the colorful sandstone formations and desert landscapes.
Arrive at Sand Creek, where you'll set up camp for the night. Relax and enjoy the serene surroundings under the starry desert sky.
Day 3: Death Hollow to Escalante, UT (Approx. 7 miles)
Continue your journey along the Boulder Mail Trail, exploring the diverse terrain and unique geological features.
Travel through beautiful slickrock areas and navigate the path of the old telegraph line.
Arrive in Escalante, where your adventure concludes.
Optional: Extended Two-Night Itinerary
For a more relaxed experience, you may add on an additional night. Spend an extra day exploring the captivating landscapes at a leisurely pace, with opportunities for side hikes and deeper exploration of the area's hidden gems.
On the second night, camp along the trail, soaking in the peaceful ambiance and enjoy more backcountry cooking.
Trip Inclusions:
Professional guide with extensive knowledge of the area's history and natural wonders
All meals during the backpacking portion of the trip
Group camping gear (tents, cooking equipment, etc.)
Transportation from Boulder back to Escalante
Optional transportation from Salt Lake City, UT, to Escalante

Personal backpacking gear (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, clothing, etc.)
Any meals or accommodations prior to the trip start and after the trip end

Moderate: Suitable for hikers with good physical fitness and some backpacking experience. The trail features uneven terrain and elevation changes

$600 per person for 1 night, 2 day standard version. Additional $300 pp to add a night. (2 participants minimum for trip to run)
